Summer Outdoor Week took place from 29th June to 7th July inclusive. A willing gang of 22 different face gave 88 people days to complete some of the tasks on the long list that require attention. Many thanks to all who made it possible, your help is much appreciated. Photographs from the week are now available too.

During the week the following tasks were tackled:

Track maintenance

  • Checked all metric bolts in Wharf Cutting.
  • Checked all bolts between Cynfal Station and 1 ½ milepost.
  • Removed kink in Rhydyronen Station.
  • Spaced sleepers by Tynllwyn whistle boards.
  • Drilled 4th set of holes by Tynllwyn whistle boards.
  • Ballasted shoulder on Tynllwyn to Tynllwyn-Hen curve.
  • Fitted bolts at Brynerwest farm crossing.
  • Gapped several joints at Brynerwest farm crossing.
  • Fitted new spacer blocks on the straight stock rail, adjusted heel block bolts and fitted extra spikes as required of turnout at the West end of Brynglas loop.
  • Removed kink by up whistle board for Dolgoch.
  • Spaced sleepers in Dolgoch cutting.
  • Oiled fishplates on 22 lengths West of Quarry Siding crossing.
  • Drilled additional fishplate holes and gapped as required in north rail west of Quarry Siding.
  • Checked and adjusted heel blocks as required on East and West end turnouts at Quarry Siding.
  • Drilled additional fishplate holes between 5 ½ & 5 ¾ Gap and gapped as required over several lengths.
  • Visual check of fishplate bolts on 6 milepost section.
  • Stakes required for install of gate on the siding delivered to site.
  • Packed all sleepers as required between Amen Corner and Nant Gwernol.
  • Checked all curves on extension with level.
  • Packed loose sleepers on loco run-round at Nant Gwernol.
  • Fitted over size fishplates as required on the loco run-round at Nant Gwernol.
  • Oiled fishplates between Nant Gwernol and Ty Dwr standardising nuts as part of the process.

General maintenance etc.

  • Removed even more scrap from Pendre.
  • Progressed the planned new siding site at Pendre.
  • Cut back vegetation around fuel tanks at Pendre.
  • Strimmed grass at Brynglas where flail will not reach.
  • Delivered stakes required for shoulder retaining kerb delivered to Six Bends.
  • Routine drainage work as required in Dolgoch area.
  • Strimmed verge between Abergynolwyn and Ty Dwr.
  • Carried out repairs to the culvert in the retaining wall on the North side of the line at Ty Dwr. ( Task a lot more difficult than it sounds)
  • Inside of Ty Dwr culvert inspected.
  • Started construction of shoulder retaining kerb and safety fence at Ty Dwr.
  • Cleared off most excess lineside vegetation between Nant Gwernol and Winding House.
  • Checked wire fence along northeast side of track between Big Bend and Winding House.
  • Removed most of the displaced rails from the lineside on Brynglas Bank.
  • Cleaned up a large number of nuts and bolts with taps & dies.
