Autumn Outdoor Week 2002

Photographs of Autumn Outdoor Week 2002 (now including shots of the west carriage shed floor concreting) are available in the photo gallery, thanks to Paul Hollinghurst and Nigel Adams.

Diesel No. 8

Loco 8 swept majestically out of the paint shop last weekend... well, eventually after some coaxing it coughed into life and immediately began shunting work to fill the gap it left in the shed! The paint work is reported to be absolutely superb and a credit to those who worked so hard to get it to that standard. Photographs are now available in the gallery (scroll down to the bottom).

To all intents and purposes the loco is now complete and will resume normal duties. The battery will now require replacement as it has become life expired. Some minor jobs remain to be completed and some good ideas for extra maintenance lights, a tachometer/hours meter and permanent speedometer may be added as time permits.

Carriage News

The Corris and Glyn Valley coaches remain in the paint shop for continuing repairs and are now joined by TR No. 2 coach which was being inspected for possible repairs. The Corris van No. 6 has been moved under cover in the North Carriage shed to dry out prior to planned inspection and repair.

In the Works

In the works the waste oil tank and bund were nearing completion whilst work on the new valve for Dolgoch original water column had begun. Some more work was done on an experimental new blast pipe cap for No 6. The steam loco's were receiving attention from a gang of volunteers including such maintenance tasks as cleaning and repainting bunker interiors, making replacement gaskets and replacing firebars after inspections etc. Sleeper drilling was going on in the yard and a gang disposed of some unwanted materials and boscage with a bonfire.

West Carriage Shed Concreting

Over the Christmas New Year period, 29th Dec - 1st Jan, given sufficient extra support we hope to dig out the south road of the shed to prepare it for the concreting of the slab track. The fishplate bolts will also need checking. Over the weekend of the 11/12th of Jan we are again looking for willing helpers to join a concrete party with the aim of completing the concreting of the North road slab track and the walkway on the North side of it. The remainder of the concreting will be completed during the Spring Outdoor Week. People with experience of concrete work especially welcome.

Spring Outdoor Week

The tasks will in addition to the West Shed concreting include the following:

  • Sleeper drilling.
  • Rail crowing.
  • Re-positioning platform road at Nant Gwernol.
  • Re-timbering the far end turnout at Nant Gwernol.
  • Completion of the Fach Goch to Cynfal relaying (12 lengths approx 360 ft).
  • Progressing rail kerbs at Six Bends & Ty Dwr.
  • Lifting dropped joints.

Saturday 22nd February - Sunday 2nd March inclusive.
