How to get here

By road | By rail | By bus

Map of mid WalesTywyn, the Talyllyn's main terminus, is located on the Cardigan Bay coast of Wales, between Aberdyfi and Barmouth, approximately 30 miles north of the university town of Aberystwyth. A street map of Tywyn, showing the location of Tywyn Wharf station, is available courtesy of www.streetmap.co.uk.

By road

Post codes:
Tywyn Wharf station: LL36 9EY
Tywyn Wharf car park: LL36 0TF
Towyn Pendre station: LL36 9EL
Rhydyronen station: LL36 9RD
Brynglas station: LL36 9PY
Dolgoch Falls station: LL36 9UW
Abergynolwyn station: 1/4 mile south-west of LL36 9UR

Tywyn is on the A493 road from Machynlleth to Dolgellau. Approaching from Aberdyfi on the main road Wharf Station is on the left. Coming from Dolgellau, drive through the town centre to the National Railways station, turn left and Wharf station is on the right 300 yards further on. The car park is across the bridge over the main line. In addition, the B4405 from Bryncrug to Minffordd on the A487 follows the railway up the Fathew valley - Dolgoch and Abergynolwyn stations are signposted. See the more detailed local map on our Stations and Facilities page for further details of roads in the area and our stations and halts.

Coach parking

Coaches may park for free in the car park at Tywyn Wharf (100 yards from the station). Coach parking is also free at Abergynolwyn; coaches may reverse up the station approach to the platform, or park in the lay-by at road level.

By rail

The nearest mainline railway station is Tywyn, on the Cambrian Coast line, operated by Arriva Trains Wales (use the National Rail Enquiries Online Journey Planner to search for timetable information).

The Cambrian Coast line connects at Machynlleth with services between Birmingham/Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth. Most Birmingham - Tywyn trains are now through trains. The Talyllyn Railway's Wharf Station is approximately 300 yards walk from the National Railways station in Tywyn - leave the station via platform one and car park, turn right.

If the times of connecting trains are not convenient, buses (see below) can often provide a convenient alternative and tickets are interavailable.

By bus

Local bus services are provided by Bws Gwynedd. Please see their site for further information. For buses which stop at the main line railway station, follow the directions above under 'by rail' to find Tywyn Wharf station. Other buses stop in High Street; proceed inland along High Street to the war memorial, adjacent to GSV Central Stores (Londis) and from here follow Neptune Road to Wharf Station, which is next to the crossroads with the A493.

Relevant bus routes are
