Winter "Track Bash" at Abergynolwyn
Between Christmas and New Year, a gang was at work tackling the point rodding at Abergynolwyn. The run was levelled, aligned and cleared the run, with broken A-frames and bases replaced. The levers controlling the west end points are now much easier to move; by coincidence, the original installer of the rodding run (back in 1976) visited on Monday. Many thanks to Justin Adams and MRFS for the report, and to Paul Knapton for the photographs below.

On the first day of the trackbash, No. 8 "Merseysider" took a train of tools and volunteers up the line to Abergynolwyn. The loco is seen here at Pendre. As there was a large number of young members working, a Talyllyn Young Members headboard was carried by the train.

On arrival at Abergynolwyn the first job was to unfreeze a facing point lock so that the train could be shunted clear of the main line.

As snow started to fall the majority of the rodding had been removed and the concrete bases holding the A-frames exposed.

This base had sunk since the rodding was first installed, so it was dug out and sand packed underneath it. It was then checked for level and alignment before the rodding was re-installed.

As more snow fell, number 8 prepared to return to Tywyn with the young volunteers, the older ones choosing to go by road!
