The Narrow Gauge Railway Museum Trust holds an important collection of artefacts relating to Narrow Gauge Railways in the British Isles, throughout a period spanning some 200 years. The collection ranges from complete locomotives to smaller pieces such as paperwork, signalling equipment and tickets. As such, it is a unique and comprehensive record of these fascinating railways, nearly 80 of which are represented in the collection.

Locomotives
The most prominent and well-known items in the museum collection are the locomotives. Six locos are to be found in the museum in Tywyn:
- George Henry (from Penrhyn Quarry, Bethesda)
- Jubilee 1897 (from Penrhyn Quarry, Bethesda)
- Dot (from Beyer Peacock works, Manchester)
- No. 13 (from Guinness Brewery, Dublin)
- Dundee Gas Works No. 2
- Rough Pup (from Dinorwic Quarries, Llanberis)
Five other locomotives are currently located away from Tywyn:
- Baguley petrol loco No. 774 - under cosmetic restoration at the Amerton Railway near Stafford.
- Sentinel loco 'Nutty' - under cosmetic restoration at Peterborough.
- Cambrai (French metre-gauge) - on display at the Irchester Narrow Gauge Railway.
- Indian Runner (Ruston diesel) and Penelope (Simplex diesel) - in working order at the North Ings Farm Museum near Sleaford, Lincolnshire.
