Dot

Dot, a tiny 0-4-0 well tank, was built by Beyer, Peacock of Manchester (works no. 2817 of 1887), to the gauge of just 18". Used in the builder's Gorton Works for shunting and to move materials around, it shows well the size advantage of the narrow gauge railway. It was expertly restored at Gorton before coming to the museum in 1961.

Dot's main technical details are:

  • Wheelbase: 2 ft. 9 in.
  • Wheel diameter: 1 ft. 4 1/4 in.
  • Cylinder dimensions: 5 in. x 6 in.
  • Boiler pressure: 170 psi.
  • Water capacity: 26 1/2 gallons
  • Gauge: 18 in.
