New Year Working Parties

« Newer News ItemOlder News Item »

A large group of members gathered in Tywyn between December 28th and January 3rd
2010.

Work undertaken included:

Concreting the floor of the South Shed floor, which involved most people, 3 concrete mixers, 20 tonne of aggregate and many bags of cement, plus 2 train loads of spoil taking to further up the Railway. The weather was very mixed ranging from sunshine to heavy rain and gale force winds with a snow storm just as the final bay of concrete was being poured. Despite all this the work was completed with much enthusiasm and good humour, so there is now a level floor and lots of happy people! Great to see so many people including some who had never done concreting before.

Clearing the area outside the workshop main doors ready to construct a retaining
wall to give more room; laying a drain, to take rain and surface water, along
the south side of the South shed.

Working on the new main doors for the North Shed, these are now ready to be hung
and painted following the installation of the wicket door.

Loco maintenance with the retubing of locomotive No 7 Tom Rolt, the removal of tubes from locomotive No 1 Talyllyn and the start of getting locomotive No 3 Sir Haydn ready for winter.

Loco 5 Midlander has continued to progress and made a trip up the line to test
axleboxes.

Carriage 22 started on its journey off its underframe ready for the renewal of
the rotten timber sections, plenty of work remains for anyone willing to give a
hand with joinery.

In between all the hard work volunteers enjoyed the annual Pre New Year Dinner,
and New Year Socials with large numbers attending both events with great fun
being had by all.

As well as all the engineering work the Talyllyn ran its usual post Christmas
train service, which included charter trains for parties.

Thanks to Lawrence Garvey for the update, and to Lawrence and John Burton for the photos.
