The Railway's Organisational Structure
The railway's organisational structure is complex. The railway itself is owned and run by the Talyllyn Railway Company (the original 1865 company), although most operating staff are volunteers, members of the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society. All the shares in the Talyllyn Railway Company are held by Talyllyn Holdings Limited, a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity (Registration No. 1089053). The members of the Talyllyn Railway Preservation Society elect 20 members to its Council at their AGM and Council in turn appoints four directors (including the chairman) to the board of Talyllyn Holdings Limited, with the family of Sir Henry Haydn appointing two directors. These directors, with the exception of one of the society-appointed directors, then form the board of the Talyllyn Railway Company. In general, matters of strategy and policy are decided by the TRPS Council, but the TR Co. Board is responsible for the safe running of the line.
