Role: Safety & Environmental Manager

Status: Full Time

Based: Tywyn 

The Talyllyn Railway is a 7.25mile heritage steam railway based in Tywyn, Gwynedd that carries 50,000 passengers each year.  The railway is operated by around 500 active volunteers who are supported by 25 permanent staff.  It operates two cafes, a shop and museum as well as a busy engineering department which maintains the running fleet, buildings, and trackway.

To support the railway, we are creating a new position of Safety & Environmental Manager and are looking to make an impact and champion safety, environmental and conservation culture across the railway.

Role Purpose:

  • The provision of timely health, safety and fire advice, guidance, training, and practical safety solutions to staff (including volunteers) in support of the operation of the Railway.
  • Overseeing and developing our environmental credentials.

What you will be doing:

  • To promote the implementation of the Safety Management System
  • Provide advice, support, and assistance to all staff to enable them to discharge their health and safety responsibilities.
  • Develop and deliver suitable safety training programmes
  • Manage Safety Compliance process including arranging and carrying out internal audits and reviews.
  • Develop online applications, processes, and monitoring systems.
  • Manage Competence processes.
  • Manage our Environmental & Sustainability policy, application, and compliance.
  • Maintain and update the Company Risk Register.
  • Provide operational railway cover (Duty Officer/Controller) when required

Who we’re looking for:

  • Experience in operational H&S, conducting risk assessments, designing method statements, completing internal/external audits; recording/managing accidents and incidents; accident and incident investigations.
  • Knowledge of current Health & Safety practice & legislation.
  • A NEBOSH Certificate Qualification, ideally holding or looking to achieve Diploma level.
  • Knowledge of environmental legislation and policies
  • Experience in providing training
  • Good people skills and the ability to muck in!
