‘Running Well!’ – Photo CharTRs

Event Series (See All)

May 31 All day

The ever reliable No.9, our very own ‘Alf’, takes to a photo charter for the first time!

We invite you to join us for a photographic day with No.9 ‘Alf’ at the head of a modern-day mixed permanent way train.

The day will begin at 7:30am at Tywyn Wharf Station, with the train departing at 8:00am.

No.9 ‘Alf’ also sees occasional uses on passenger trains at gala events – Nathan Spence

‘Alf’ has become an absolutely mainstay of the “modern” TR, first arriving on the Railway alongside a sister engine of the same type in 1970. These two locomotives were sourced from the NCB’s Huncoat Colliery in Lancashire and were already the rather unique 2ft 3″ gauge that the Talyllyn utilises.

Both were combined to make one good locomotive, and the remains would provide a source of spare parts going forward. No.9 officially entered service in 1971, debuting in a striking all-white undercoat!

No.9 ‘Alf’ on a gala day freight special, complete with Land Rover! – Nathan Spence

‘Alf’ has gained a reputation for almost always ‘Running Well’ thanks to it’s reliability and constant deployment on engineering, permanent way and rescue duties – which it excels at!

In the morning we will make our way up the line stopping for run pasts and staged photographs along the way. The morning’s train will consist of our more modern engineering train stock paired with a couple of our original carriages.

Entering the afternoon we will focus on the area around Nant Gwernol, as No.9 played a large part in the construction of the extension – which is celebrating 50 years of operation this year.

The rolling stock will change around in the afternoon to provide some varied shots – we will return to Tywyn Wharf by 3pm at the latest.

We hope you can join us for this half day experience!

We recommend that participants are fully ambulant as we will be disembarking trains where there are no platforms or steps. Please wear appropriate sturdy footwear – and bring enough charged camera batteries to last!

Tickets limited to 25 participants | £40

Book before 30th April to ensure this Photo CharTR goes ahead.
