Many thanks to the Abergynolwyn Show Committee, who recently donated £1000 towards a defibrillator for Abergynolwyn Station.
The Talyllyn Railway has always been closely connected with the village of Abergynolwyn ever since the village was first developed to provide homes for the Slate Quarry workers of the 19th century. The Railway was originally built to carry slate down to the coast for shipment onwards by sea or by mainline railway, but additionally it has always been an important part of the infrastructure for transport in the local community.
Links between the Railway and the Village Community have been strengthened over the years. More recently, the annual Abergynolwyn Show, now in it’s 17th year, has been hosted on the field owned by the Railway and located next to the station car park. Abergynolwyn Show Chairman, Jennie Evans, said that the show, which began in 2003, now raises in excess of £7000 each year all of which is donated to support local charities who benefit the village in any way. Last year, the Show Committee allocated £1000 towards the provision of a defibrillator at Abergynolwyn Station.
Jennie’s family, who have always lived in the village, have had a long association with the Railway. Her grandmother was the TR’s original ‘Railway Lady who used to run the refreshment waggon that was originally situated in a siding at Abergynolwyn, before the present station was rebuilt and extended to include the popular Tea Rooms today.
TR’s General Manager Stuart Williams said that the new installation meant that five of the six main stations on the Talyllyn Railway, Wharf, Pendre, Dolgoch, Nant Gwernol and now Abergynolwyn were all equipped with defibrillators. (Rhydyronen station is already covered by one located at nearby Tynllwyn Campsite.)
Training has already been given by our local First Responders team to a number of Talyllyn Railway staff and volunteers. Further training opportunities will continue to be made available so that others of our army of volunteers who wish to become qualified in using the defibrillator may also undertake the appropriate training.
