Before you visit

The railway is currently shut.  The cafe & shop reopen on 1st February, and trains run from 19th Feb for the half term period

  • Are there any current COVID restrictions and measures?

    We remain vigilant.  The safety and comfort of our staff, volunteers and passengers is our top priority at all time.

    With the rise of Omicron, we are tightening some restrictions. There are some measures we ask everyone to follow.:

    • It is law in Wales to wear masks in indoor areas such as the shop & museum.  We still encourage people to wear masks in all indoor environments for the safety of themselves and others.
    • We are reverting to compartment only bookings until the end of March, so passengers will not have to share compartments.  Masks in this instance are optional.
    • Please, where possible, maintain a social distance.  Hands-Face-Space
    • We offer hand sanitisers throughout the railway, and have an enhanced cleaning regime in place for the trains and buildings.
  • What are the different ticket options.

    We currently have available:

    • Private Compartments – this gives you an exclusive area which is not shared with anyone else.  Standard compartments seat up to 6 adults in comfort.  There are physical screens between yourself and other travellers.
    • First Class Compartment – a premium private space, again seating up to 6 adults.
    • Saloon Compartment – a larger area with glazing all round for great views – seating up to 12Compartment bookings are for round trips starting/ending at Tywyn Wharf station only.  Members are able to book at a discount.  Only count those who need a seat in numbers (i.e ignore the under 5’s).  Dog tickets are extra

     

  • How much is it to travel?

  • Are your intermediate stations now open?

    Yes!  All stations are now re-open and passengers can join/leave as they wish.  Guards will sell tickets on the trains for those joining anywhere apart from Wharf station.

    If you do wish to join at an intermediate station, then it is subject to space being available.  We recommend joining at Wharf and staying on the train for the round trip at the moment.

    Please note the timetable to ensure you can get on/off at the right times!

  • Are there any concessions or discounts on the trains?

    Yes we offer discounts for:

    • Great Little Trains of Wales card holders
    • Heritage Railway Association ‘Inter-Rail’ card holders
    • Reciprocal Railway discounts
    • Local resident discounts
    • Carers
    • Rail Staff Discounts

    Pre-booking is recommended, to book please call the booking office 01654 710472 (9am – 4pm).

  • Can I bring my dog?

    Absolutely, but they must be pre-booked and we request that they are kept off the seats and under control.  A dog rover ticket is £4 and they receive their own ‘doggie bag’!  Find out more: https://www.talyllyn.co.uk/visitor-information/dog-friendly

  • I have a footplate ride/experience day booked, when can I do it?

    Footplate and driver experiences restart in 2022.

  • What provisions are there for disabled travellers?

    We have an accessible compartment available to book on each train, pre-booking is required – call 01654 710472.    Please let us know details of your requirements when booking so we are ready to assist.  Disabled passengers and their carers are able to travel at discounted rates.

  • Can I purchase a ticket on the day?

    You can, but there is not guaranteed availability.  We close bookings at midnight the day before, so plenty of chance to book in advance and avoid disappointment.

     

  • When should I arrive for my train?

    We recommend that you arrive at least 30 minutes before departure time. If you wish to make use of the Café, shop & Museum before you travel, please allow extra time.

On the Train

  • How long is the trip?

    The trip lasts 2 ½ hours.  During your trip you have a 30 minute break at Abergynolwyn – there is a cafe and toilets there to use.

  • Can we get off and enjoy a walk?

    Those booking compartments will have their exclusive use for a round trip starting and ending at Tywyn Wharf.  We encourage people to stay on the train for the round trip as there might not be room on the return.

  • Can I order extras such as food and drink for the journey?

    Prosecco and Welsh Hampers, along with disposable glasses and cutlery, will be ready for you to collect from the cafe at Wharf before you board the train. Cream Teas will be served during the refreshment stop at Abergynolwyn.

    In Each hamper you have a feast of local Welsh Produce to enjoy on your trip:

    • Sandwich (ham, cheese, tuna or egg on white or brown bread)
    • Savoury snack (e.g sausage roll)
    • Salad Pot
    • Bottle of water
    • Yoghurt pot

    Once booked you will be emailed for your choices.  You can choose to have the Hamper at Wharf or Abergynolwyn for the out or return journey.  Hampers are £8.50 per person

    The ‘Engine Drivers’ childs lunch box has half a sandwich, pom bears snack, yoghurt pot and a carton of juice (£4.50)

    Cream Teas have a reserved table at Abergynolwyn.  Freshly home made scone, jam, clotted cream and choice of tea/coffee or juice

  • There are four compartment types, what is the difference?

    Our standard compartment seating up to 6, comfortable seating and two opening droplights.

    Our First class compartment – premium seating up to 6 people

    Our saloon offers seating for up to 12 people and also is an accessible space.  Good views behind the loco on the journey up to Nant Gwernol, rear of the train on the way down – great views.  Only one per train.

    Finally – our open carriage, possible the best way to enjoy the countryside and the sights and smells of the train.  Not prebookable and included in the train until the weather becomes too cold!  Seats up to 6 – dogs love them!
