Become a Volunteer on the Talyllyn Railway, the world’s first preserved railway. We look forward to welcoming you to the Railway with a Heart of Gold, to work together toward a common purpose – the continued existence of the Talyllyn Railway.
The Talyllyn Railway has relied heavily upon volunteer labour since the Railway’s preservation in 1951. An army of volunteers helped to rebuild the Railway and lay the foundations (quite literally) for the successful tourist attraction we are now.
Today, whilst several of the key roles at the Railway are full time, paid positions (Shop, Catering and Office staff) we still need up to twenty volunteers a day in roles such as station masters, track workers, drivers and Guards.
Don’t forget there are many other roles that may appeal to you as well e.g. painting external wood and metalwork, looking after station gardens, hedge-laying, planting up tubs and planters for the platforms, working in the shop or cafe – there really is something for everyone and training is free.
As a Volunteer at the Railway, you can give as much or as little time as you like with some volunteers coming for a fortnight every summer and others appearing two or three times a week all year round.

Please note that for new volunteers, we require a minimum of 6 weeks’ notice before you plan to come for your first stint of volunteering.
